New Wolvix mirror in Greece

(Posted: 2010-03-19) ^

We've got a new Wolvix mirror in Greece, hosted by the University of Crete - Computer Center. A big thanks goes to Kapetanakis Giannis for offering to mirror us.

If you want to use the new mirror in slapt-get/gslapt on Wolvix-2.0.0 you can add one of these URLs to your slapt-getrc:

In other news. I'm still upgrading and adding packages to our repository, and Oithona is doing some researching and testing on optimizing a kernel for his Acer Aspire One. Once a working kernel is built it will be added to the package pool, and I'll do the same for my Asus Eee.

I still don't have a new build ISO for Cub, but I hope to produce one shortly. Even though we don't have any new beta releases out yet I'd love to get some feedback from users who's been trying the latest build ISO and from those who's upgraded their beta installs.

Have a great weekend. =)

Short development update

(Posted: 2010-03-15) ^

Here's a short heads up about the progressing development. A new build ISO has been uploaded for those who want to keep up with the latest development. As it's much easier for me to upload files to the mirror now I'll keep making the build ISOs available to you all. Keep in mind though that I don't test the builds as rigorously as I do the betas before I upload them.

I've also made a small change to the front page on wolvix.org. Under the news box you'll find a "banner" which links to the latest build ISO, and to a PackageLog which keeps track of the latest packages added to the repository. I've neglected keeping change logs for far too long and I'll try to improve on this area...

I was hoping I'd have a new beta release to show this weekend, but until a people cloning machine is invented life outside of Wolvix will interfere with my development time. I will however keep builds and package updates coming. Next on my ToDo list is to make a new build for Cub.

An error in the guide to upgrade Beta2 HDD installs has been corrected. I've successfully upgraded my own install of Wolvix-2.0.0-Cub-Beta1 to the latest packages, so the guide applies to Cub Beta1 installs as well.

That's it for now, time for this wolf to get some sleep...

Return of the living dead werewolf

(Posted: 2010-03-11) ^

Greetings!

It's been quite a while since there was any development here, but things are finally getting back on track now. The last couple of weeks I've been picking up the slack and I'm in the process of making a new public development release. (Beta3) A lot of packages has already been updated and the development is on going.

We have also been so fortunate to get a new host for all our files. ISOs, sources and packages are now hosted at: ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/wolvix/ A big thanks goes out to Darren ‘Tadgy’ Austin for providing us with a new and fast mirror. The new mirror syncs every four hours with a non public rsync server I’ve set up. (Anyone wanting to host a mirror for Wolvix can contact me and I’ll give you access to the rsync server.)

Here’s a guide on how to add the new mirror to your existing Wolvix-2.0.0-beta2 install and upgrade the packages.

As some of you might have noticed a new development build ISO (build51) was listed at DistroWatch. This ISO was not intended for public download as it’s buggy and a new public beta release should be out shortly. However since the cat is out of the bag I’ve decided to make a new build ISO available to you. The Wolvix-2.0.0-build52.iso is less buggy than build51, but keep in mind that it’s NOT a beta release, just a development snapshot.

You can download the Wolvix-2.0.0-build52.iso here:

That’s it for now. I hope to bring you more updates and announce the next beta release in the next few days.

Main mirror is down

(Posted: 2009-10-13) ^

As many of you have noticed the package repository and the main ISO mirror is currently down. Well not really down, but it seems RubyRingTech has decided to dropped sponsoring us without any notice. I've tried to get in touch with my contact there, (Andrew) but have gotten no reply, so I figure he's started working another place or something. All good things must come to and end as they say, so thanks for all the help RubyRing and a very special thanks to Andrew, who's been my contact there.

As luck would have it I've recently been contacted by a Wolvix user by the name of Hugo Cardozo, who's been setting his own mirror for Wolvix. So as of now I'll be directing the DNS repo.wolvix.org to his server (wolvix3.homelinux.net) until we find a new hosting solution, as I'm not sure how much load we'll put on Hugo's mirror. Thanks a bunch for setting up your mirror Hugo, very timely indeed. =)

In other news (or lack of news) you've also probably noticed the rather poor activity from my side lately. We're not dead, just in suspended animation... Well not really. It's just that I'm having difficulties finding the time to sit and work with Wolvix right now, but I hope to get back on track in not too long.

That's all for now. I'll keep you all posted on the mirror/hosting situation.
